As you know, the title of my blog was "Still looking for a job" and since I have a job now I've decided to change it to "The Daily Sands of Times". I wanted the "Daily Sundial", but apparently California State beat me to it. Those Californians sure know how to pick a title.
Well...It's May 24th, and now have a job offer. About a week ago I
was flown to an interview in Dalton, Georgia. It is the capital of the
carpet industry. Thanks to my Aunt, who was the first female manager
within the company I was able to receive this interview.
The
process was about a month long, but well worth it. I don't know exactly
where I will be relocated to but I will be training at their
headquarters starting July 15th. I am extremely excited. This is not the
accounting job that I thought I would end up with and the personalities
of sales people have seemed more fitting for me.
I
like sales because my job will require that I "drive" to see local
businesses within an existing territory and check up on them. You know I have a passion for driving and especially talking to people; Connect
them with interior design products and services. This includes meeting up with a variety
of different people and having lunches. Now I can't say how awesome
this job is yet because I haven't officially started, but I have a
feeling it's going to be very fitting of what I want out of life.
The personalities of
the five people I interviewed gave me that vibe that it's okay to have
a sense of humor and think outside of the box. I would make jokes and they we would laugh. You see, being a sales
person means having an entrepreneurial spirit when it comes to making
presentations. You have so much room to be creative when it comes to
selling a product. I have always been a fan of unconventional
presentations, and believe it or not one of the interviews I had was absolutely like none I've had before.
The firm I will be working for is
owned by That famous holding company by Warren Buffet. How cool is that? Warren Buffet anyone? And
none of this could have been done without my Aunt at the forefront of
securing me this interview, my parents for coaching me, and my friends
for believing in me. This has truly been quite the experience.
I will never forget what it was like to be unemployed, and I will never
forget that politics matter. Most of all there are people out there like
me who still haven't found jobs not because they are unqualified, but
because businesses aren't functioning under good business practices. I
have a word of advice for struggling corporations out there. Instead of
hiring so many people at once and firing a bunch, why not just hire a
few and truly invest in training them? After all training expenses are a
loss when people quit or are let go. "What the world needs now...is love...sweet love"
Being
unemployed for this long has taught me so much. I have also learned as a result of being unemployed: finding out more about who I am. You've already seen the
list of things I've learned written in my other blogs: From shooting
guns to cooking to drinking wine. I have even decided to get used to
drinking whiskey on the rocks. Practice makes perfect, and might I
recommend start with Jameson Irish.
On a side note, my younger brother is back from UT after finishing his freshman year. He has also secured himself a job in the same week. It's a summer job at Target, and my family couldn't be happier that both of us are employed. We've been hanging out all over the place and on Sunday, we're going to a gnarly surf town known as Santa Cruz!
Until next time ladies and gentlemen. I will also be continuing the story of "Beyond Nowhere". For it was an unfinished analogy for the unemployed and the dreamers.
